History
Creation of the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation
Three years after Dr. Antoni Esteve i Subirana passed away, his wife, Paquita Soler, and his children created the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation to honor the memory of the illustrious pharmacist. Founded with the clear goal of promoting research in pharmacology, the Foundation is a living testament to his dedication to science and medicine. The Foundation’s first board of trustees was made up of Dr. Josep Esteve i Soler, serving as president, together with two more of Dr. Antoni Esteve’s children, Montserrat Esteve i Soler and Joan Esteve i Soler, as well as Joaquim Targa i Cuyàs.

First international steps
With Dr. Josep Esteve i Soler serving as president and Dr. Sergi Erill serving as scientific director, the Foundation undertook its mission, taking as a reference Britain’s CIBA Foundation, characterized by Lord William Henry Beveridge as a “meeting place for scientists”. The Foundation organized its first international symposium, bringing together outstanding researchers from all over the world to discuss subjects such as drugs’ protein binding. This event marked the beginning of a series of international symposiums that would go on to explore diverse areas of pharmacology in following years.
Promoting research
Researchers from all over Spain came together in a roundtable organized by the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation to discuss the challenges in treating severe infections caused by S. aureus. Over more than 30 editions, this activity format has gone on to tackle a wide variety of questions, including advanced therapies, gender perspectives, and research in healthcare environments.

Recognizing excellence: the Research Award
The Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation established the Research Award to recognize the best pharmacology research article published by Spanish authors in an international journal. The first award went to researchers in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of the Basque Country’s School of Medicine for their article about antidepressants published in the British Journal of Pharmacology. So far, the Award has recognized 17 papers by researchers from centers all over Spain.
Commitment to scientific communication
Together with La Vanguardia newspaper, the Foundation organized the first International Symposium on Science Journalism in Barcelona, opening a dialogue between scientists and the media to promote the dissemination of scientific knowledge. This event strengthened interaction between science and the media, helping the general public understand advances in science. This event gave rise to the Catalan Assocation of Scientific Communication, among other initiatives.
Digital connection
The Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation launched its first webpage on the internet, an Important development in its mission of disseminating scientific knowledge and facilitating interaction between the scientific community and the general public. Our webpage has continually evolved, enabling downloads of the Foundation’s publications free of charge and facilitating enrollment in the wide range of activities that it organizes.

Compiling academic knowledge
The first volume of the Pharmacotherapy Revisited series was published, compiling key articles in the development of pharmacology for use in academic training.
Training for innovation
The Foundation organized its first course aiming to provide young researchers with training in essential skills for research that often receive little attention in official study programs. These training sessions have dealt with matters such as applying for grants, writing scientific articles, and communicating with the media in more than 275 courses carried out in Catalonia, other regions of Spain, and abroad, training more than 7,600 professionals and consolidating the Foundation’s commitment to strengthening research skills.
Centennial commemoration
The 100th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Antoni Esteve i Subirana was celebrated in the Llotja de Mar in Barcelona, bringing together important people to pay homage to his scientific legacy.
Growing dissemination
The first Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation notebook was published. The notebooks are a collection of books that treat diverse subjects related to research and the dissemination of science. With more than 50 titles published to date, this collection offers a fascinating vision of medicine and science, from the impact of TV series to the role of women in twentieth century biomedicine. All the notebooks are available free of charge through the Foundation’s webpage www.esteve.org.

2009 Establishing dialogues in science
The Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation held its first Discussion Group, a forum for debate about the latest trends in pharmacological research. Migraines, the genetics of addiction, the memory of pain, and heteromers are just a few of the subjects that would be dealt with in these international discussion groups.
Bridges between science and the media
Together with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the public television network (RTVE), the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation organized the course “Scientists in front of the media”. More than 500 researchers have been trained in over 20 editions of this course to facilitate collaboration between scientists and journalists in disseminating scientific research.
Science education
The Dr. Antoni Esteve published “Medicines and me”, a book that explains how medications work to children. Illustrated by Marta Capdevila, this book brings science to children in an easy-to-understand and entertaining way.
Renovation and celebration
The year of its 35th anniversary, the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation updated its institutional image, celebrating its trajectory and contribution to pharmacological research with a new, more accessible webpage.

New presidency
Dr. Montserrat Esteve i Soler assumed the presidency of the second board of trustees, on which Joan Esteve i Soler and Antoni Esteve i Cruella also serve.

Adversity and resilience
The Foundation continues its work through the pandemic, organizing the online debate “Impatient science” to analyze the challenges faced and errors committed during the COVID-19 crisis. The event benefits from the participation of experts from the areas of pharmacology, publishing, and scientific communication.
A new generation
The third generation, represented by Dr. Antoni Esteve i Subirana, serves the board of trustees of the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation.
Innovation for the future
The Foundation opens a new chapter in its history by fostering research into advanced therapies, thus consolidating its commitment to innovation and scientific progress.

Scientific Patronage Award
The Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation is singled out for the autonomous government of Catalonia’s 2023 National Research Award in the category of scientific patronage to recognize the Foundation’s work promoting pharmacological research nationally and internationally for more over the last four decades.

Dr. Antoni Esteve i Subirana
His entrepreneurial spirit and his vocation for pharmacology led him to create the first original specialties on the second floor of the pharmacy that his family had had for five generations.
