The University of Barcelona and the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation have presented today, December 4, 2024, in the Historical Building, the UB – Antoni Esteve i Subirana Chair for Research in Pharmacology, which bears the name of the two institutions.

The Chair’s efforts are focused on promoting research and knowledge transfer in the areas of basic, clinical and social pharmacology. It will do so by organising scientific activities aimed at doctoral students, such as conferences and round tables, and by publishing articles on pharmacology in different formats, as well as an award for the best master’s thesis related to pharmacology. Another of the outstanding actions of this new Chair will be the recruitment of young talent in research, through contracts to prepare the doctoral thesis or to do a postdoctoral stay at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences of the UB.

The director of the Chair, Mercè Pallàs, professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences, stated that “the future of research in pharmacology depends on our ability to nurture and support young scientists, to provide them with the resources and support they need”. At the same time, he thanked the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation “for the initiative and the fact of sharing the vision of a world in which science and research must be valued and encouraged”.

On the other hand, Joan Guàrdia, rector of the University of Barcelona, pointed out that this is a “special chair” due to the link between the university and the foundation: “It is a clear commitment to a public-private complicity that will allow us to achieve shared objectives”.

Laura Gil-Vernet, president of the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation, stressed that “public-private collaboration has manifested itself as a necessary option for progress: in this sense, we are committed to generating innovative and applied science following the trajectory set by Dr. Antoni Esteve Subirana, which inspires the origin and mission of the Foundation”.

Jordi Camarasa, dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences, stressed that this chair was created “with the spirit of improving the training of students and promoting research in pharmacology, which will have obvious benefits for the health and well-being of society”.

The two institutions wanted to highlight the importance of the agreement, which will involve the joint work of the only public centre that teaches the degree in Pharmacy in Catalonia and the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation, founded in 1982 to stimulate the progress of pharmacotherapy through research.

The event was attended  by Mercè Segarra, vice-rector for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Transfer of the UB, and representatives of the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation.
