The writing of scientific texts in Spanish contains some peculiarities that, however, are not in the public domain, nor in the domain of scientists, translators or editors. As a result, many professionals assume when translating that what is correct in English is also correct in Spanish, without noticing that the result may be violating the basic rules of Spanish, from accentuation to capital letters.
Based on his experience teaching scientific writing and translation, the lecturer in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Malaga, Gonzalo Claros, presents the Esteve Foundation’s Notebook How to translate and write scientific texts in Spanish. This manual includes the rules of Spanish that must be known to write science, as well as how to avoid the errors that most frequently appear in scientific texts.
This is the second edition, corrected and enlarged, of the book Ideas, regles y consejos para traducir y redactar textos científicos en español, which aims to be useful for professionals with the most varied training, from researchers, students and teachers to translators, writers and proofreaders.
This new edition is divided into three large blocks. The first justifies why the book is necessary and why it focuses above all on the combination of English and Spanish. The second section describes the rules and regulations that govern scientific writing and that every translator should know and comply with. The last block includes tips and all the information to improve scientific writing and translation, especially focused on non-scientific professionals.
